Creativity Vs. Education Part 1

Hello All!

I am now an addict to WordPress.  I literally started adding content to this blog yesterday and I already have 30 followers.  I feel so blessed and I hope that what I post in some way, shape or form helps you or challenges you to think at the very least.  So right off the bat I want and hope this post can create a discussion.  I am all about dialogue and probing/prodding to find answers.  I have this very intricate philosophy on Creativity.  I myself am very creative,  I think so differently from everyone around me that sometimes it is hard for me to maintain focus.  I guess now a days I might be considered ADHD but I am pre-ADHD diagnosis.  I’ll say it again, I am very creative but I will add this little piece, in a hushed tone, so are you!  Everyone that has ever been born has been born with this special trait.  From birth you and I were born creative.  The walls of our minds being pushed further and further with every grain of knowledge we collect and store away.  There is a problem, more of an epidemic, in my opinion.  Our education System.

I want you to think back to when you were a child.  Were you afraid to try new things in the same manner that you are now?  Were you afraid to be wrong? Or to step out on a limb?  If you watch children there is a level of innocence which in some cases translates to a level of naivety that causes them to do things without fear of what others will think.  It causes them to try new things, testing the boundaries of their creativity, to find out what works and what doesn’t.

I am sure the same applied to you because it does for all children.  Now as you progressed in school did you become more creative or less?  I can only speak for myself but I have talked to countless others and they all have the same to say.  School DOES NOT help them become more creative.  In fact it facilitates an environment where you become less creative.  Not all schools or education systems but there are a lot, which means kids are being lost in the fold.

My PHILOSOPHY centers squarely on the fact the CREATIVITY is a fluid and dynamic essence within humans and our current education system teaches in a very linear fashion.  Examining the fact alone leads a lot of kids to feel like they are less than, especially if they cannot pick up things as quick as others.  They end up feeling dumb or stupid which couldn’t be farther from the truth.  I know because I was there!  If not for the love and support of my family I would have slipped through the cracks like so many children now-a-days.  This is a very serious epidemic.  I don’t have the answers but I am aware of the problem.  I think I will do some digging and see if I can find anything for the next post, depending on if this gets good feedback!

I will take a quick minute to shift gears here.  Have you heard of SIR KEN ROBINSON?  If not, then you must at least google him.  He is a very influential speakers with most of his topic dealing with both education and creativity.  I stumbled upon him a couple of years ago and he believes things very similar to myself.  At the time I didn’t know anyone else out there had the same thoughts.  He is very well-known because of his special set of TED Talks that he gave.  My favorite is his very first one, where he describes the problem, HOW SCHOOLS KILL CREATIVITY.  Also keep in mind this was in 2006 which makes it all the more surreal, at least for me!  I hope you take a look because the next 20 minutes will have you thinking differently about our current system

Please feel free to comment.  Agree or Disagree?  let me know, let others know, but the most important thing is that you are thinking.

Until next time.
